My name is Beth McArdle and I am from Coventry, Rhode Island. This is my fifth year here at URI and I will graduate this May with a B.S. in Biology, Secondary Education, and General Science. I am currently a mentor coordinator for a program here at URI called "Pathways for Success in Science (PSS) Mentoring." The goal of this mentoring program is to engage underrepresented minorities in Providence middle schools in areas of science. We have both after school programs, working with the Children's Crusades and a Saturday program. I was a mentor for two semesters and now I coordinate the URI mentors in the program. It is a very rewarding experience and it has really opened my eyes to what teaching is all about.
I was on the Rowing team here at URI for four years and it was amazing. I hope to continue rowing someday for a club team. Outside of school, I like to run, ride, swim, row, etc. I have a very active family and we train together for a lot of races. Last summer, we all did the Wild Dog Triathlon here in RI and our goal is to complete a half-ironman this coming summer.
The unit will focus on the concept of Genetics and Heredity. The book that they are using is called "Organisms from Macro to Micro" and will go through a series of lessons that will conclude with the topics of Genetics and Heredity. We will discuss genes and how they interact to be expressed as dominant or recessive traits. The idea of inheritance will tie in to traits and how Mendel discovered the main fundamentals of heredity. Gene pairs will be analyzed in their homozygous and heterozygous forms and the process of meiosis and fertilization will be covered.
The unit that will cover a great deal of material starting with traits and leading through to meiosis, heredity, and cloning. There is a lot of material and several activities that will go along with the concepts of this unit. The students will learn to do Punnett squares, investigate their own genome and discover conclusive evidence of cloning. The purpose of the lesson is to allow the students to gain an understanding of the study of genetics.
